Session Preview
Note: This page has been included to give you an idea of what to expect
in a DG Marketplace session. Of course, you can skip this preview and go
directly to Your Site Savings, to get an online estimate
of your energy bill savings.
This overview of a DG Marketplace session includes the following sections:
One summary DG Marketplace analysis is provided on a complimentary basis .
Extended analysis and report detail and summary analysis of additional sites available on
a fee basis. (see Products and Services).
Registration is required to identify which kind of user you are. Once you register, your
site and session information will be saved so that you can conduct alternative
evaluations (e.g., alternative fuel prices) without having to reenter basic site data.
Each DG Marketplace session begins with a series of forms in which you describe
your site. This information is used to develop electric and thermal hourly
loads required in the DG economic analysis. An example form is shown below.
Site descriptions include both required and optional user inputs.
Required Site Data
-
Site zip code
-
Business activity
-
Facility size (square feet or other measures, e.g., nursing home beds)
-
Electric utility (distribution utility in deregulated states)
-
Manufacturing/industrial sites require some energy use characteristics
Optional Site Data (not required to conduct site analysis)
-
Vintage (existing building or new construction)
-
Operating hours - opening and closing for weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays
-
Heating system - equipment, fuel, ventilation system
-
Air conditioning system - equipment, fuel, ventilation system
-
End-use fuel uses
-
Generation fuel
-
Natural gas availability
-
Monthly electricity billing information
-
Monthly natural gas billing information
-
Fuel use details
-
Waste heat-related details
-
Other selected site characteristics
DG Technologies
-
engines
-
microturbines
-
turbines
-
fuel cells
Once site information and any optional analysis parameters are specified,
DG Marketplace automatically applies site 8760 hourly loads, utility
rate structures and DG technology information to size and install a DG system and presents the results
in a Web session. Users may opt for extented analysis
capabilities which permit specification of selected DG system characteristics and other system design flexibility.
Users may also select detailed report results which extend the annual reports of the basic analysis to include
monthly and (optionally) 8670 hourly detail.
Summary results are designed for general screening while the extended analysis and extended report detail
are provided to support the kind of detailed financial and engineering planning
required as first steps in a DG implementation. Additional detail on each of the three options are
provided in more detail in the Products and Services section.
Basic Analysis
Basic analysis results are presented in both table and chart form. These
results are provided free for one site. Extended analysis and extended reports
are available on a fee basis. (see Products and Services).
Online reports include a variety of charts and tables documenting site characteristics
specified by the user. The only user-required site information is business type
and size; optional information can be included in future analysis sessions
with each site.
DG economic analysis is summarized with annual analysis results. The example
below shows that this system achieved a payback in 2.9 years; that is, energy
bill savings minus annual costs of operating the DG system would pay for
the equipment and installation costs in 2.9 years.
The DG system characteristics section summarizes information for the particular
DG system providing the best site results. Users can consider all DG technologies
or narrow the analysis to a single technology type (e.g., microturbines).
Extended Report Detail
Monthly summary energy use statistics and analysis are also presented for the site with
and without a DG system. Monthly peak kW is shown below. Monthly kWh is also
shown in Online DG analysis results.
Extended report detail also optionally includes 8760 hourly
electric and thermal loads along with hourly DG system evaluations. This information is provided
online and in automatically emailed spreadsheet files.
An example of 8760 Detailed Site Analysis Reports is shown in both
table and chart form below.
A description of summary, monthly and 8760 hourly analysis and report information is provided in
the Products and Services descriptions.
Basic DG Marketplace analysis can be extended both with respect to analysis specifications and with respect
to report documentation. The following items describe these extensions.
Extended Analysis Capabilities
-
User-specification of DG system characteristics (kW, efficiency, Btu/kW, O&M costs, installation cost)
-
User-specification of alternative DG system design details including waste heat applications
-
Representation of emissions control costs
-
Ability to incorporate standby rates and interconnection costs
-
Operating period specifications
Extended Report Detail
-
Monthly energy, kWh, kW, O&M costs, fuel costs, energy and demand charges
-
Monthly evaluation of waste heat applications to space and water heat and air conditioning
-
8760 hourly electric and thermal loads
-
Contribution of DG system to meeting 8760 electric and thermal loads
Once you have entered information for a site, you can rerun the analysis
with alternative inputs as many times as you like for one year. For instance, you might want to conduct individual
analyses for different technology (e.g., fuel cells, microturbines, engines)
or for alternative values for other inputs such as future fuel prices.
If you are using the extended analysis or extended report capabilities, you
will also have access to extensions each time you rerun the site
analysis with no additional charge. You will have access to analysis for each
site for one year.
DG marketplace saves site information to make it easy to return to evaluate
DG economics as energy prices change, new technologies become available and
as new incentives are provided for DG technologies (e.g., utility subsidies,
state and federal tax incentives).
At this point you will have received DG analysis for your site providing
an estimate of the energy bill savings resulting from a DG system implementation.
If estimated energy bill savings are significant, you will want to consider
proceeding with the next steps in an installation process.
The What's Next section of DG Marketplace describes
other factors you will want to consider and additional steps required in
a DG installation process. This section also describes options available
for DG project installation ranging from acting as the primary contractor
to using a performance contract with a DG integrator who will take responsibility
for the entire project and guarantee a fixed level of energy bill savings.
You can use these resource to develop your own action plan, or DG Marketplace
will, at your request, forward information to DG companies who specialize
in applications like yours.
